Get more out of every AI question you ask about a PDF

PDFs are great at keeping a document looking exactly the way you designed it. That is also exactly the problem when you hand one to an AI tool: it has to go through a lot of layout information that has nothing to do with what the page actually says.

Accepts .pdf · up to 10MB · outputs a Markdown (.md) file

Why bother converting first

Open a PDF in a plain text editor and you will see what we mean: font tables, positioning coordinates, embedded formatting, none of which tells you anything about the actual content. Upload the whole file to an AI tool and you are paying to have all of that processed right along with your real words.

This tool reads through your PDF, pulls out the actual text, and rebuilds it as clean Markdown where headings still look like headings and lists still look like lists. What is left is just the substance, usually at a fraction of the original size. Scanned or photographed pages, the kind with no real text to pull out, need a separate text recognition step. That is a premium capability available on a dedicated instance rather than something this free site runs for you.

What you will get back

  • Clean Markdown with headings and bullet points still recognizable, not one giant wall of text
  • A plain-text .md file you can open, search, or paste anywhere
  • A file you can drop straight into ChatGPT, Claude, or any AI tool without the extra weight

Common questions

Will this work on a PDF that is just a scanned image?

It depends on the plan. Reading text out of a scan or photo takes a separate text recognition step, which is a premium feature rather than part of this free converter. On this site, a scanned page will come through blank instead of guessed at. If you need that capability, contact us about a dedicated instance with it turned on.

Is my document kept or shared anywhere?

No. Your file is processed just long enough to produce the converted Markdown and is not stored or shared afterward.

What happens to the formatting? Do I lose bold text and tables?

PDF doesn't store bold text or tables as tagged information the way Word does, so those get reconstructed from patterns in the text as best we can. Headings and lists usually come through cleanly; complex multi-column layouts are the trickiest case.

What format do I actually get back?

A plain text file in Markdown format, the file will end in .md. Markdown is just text with a few simple symbols added, like # in front of a heading or - in front of a bullet, so it stays easy to read on its own and easy for other software, including AI tools, to work with.

Is there a file size limit?

Uploads are capped at 10MB, which covers the vast majority of reports, contracts, and presentations you would typically be working with.
